This post is part of an attempt to do something like 100 recycling tips for damn near anything in something close to, anyway, 100 days. We’ll see how that goes. When the 100 Recycling Tips are all published here on Easy Ways to Go Green, we’ll do a master list so that every link exists on one single page for everyone to be able to link over to, or to use as a reference guide when questions on how to recycle different things in your life inevitably come up.
How to Recycle 100 Common Things: #23 Recycling Metal Coat Hangers
Let’s say you work in some kind of corporate job that asks you to wear a suit, a sport coat or nice shirts to work most days. Let’s say you have a slew of vintage dresses from high end designers. What about a heavy winter coat? If you’re in any of these spots, and most of us are, then your wardrobe necessitates trips to the dry cleaners. And trips to the dry cleaners means you’re going to be bringing home plenty of those metal coat hangers.
Wrapped in a thin plastic and often including a branded over-slip of paper, we wanted to know how exactly to go about recycling those pesky metal coat hangers from dry cleaners.
A somewhat recent Fox News study notes that the numbers for percentages of metal coat hangers that DO NOT get recycled is staggering, at 90 percent or higher each year. Whether this is because consumers don’t realize that you can recycle these items, or because they frankly just don’t know how — remains to be seen. But as is the case with many household items, a little bit of education on the process can go a long way towards creating a greener place for all of us. So yes, metal coat hangers are recyclable. Here’s some more information on how to do it.
Like many cheap or seemingly disposable metal objects, metal coat hangers can be recycled as scrap metal. It is important to note that several city-wide programs don’t include metal coat hangers in the list of items accepted in curb-side recycling bins. If you’re really in a pickle about how to go about recycling metal coat hangers, at the very least consider bringing them back to your local neighborhood dry cleaners, and nearly all of them will accept the hangers for re-use.
