There’s nothing quite like getting something you need, and doing something good for somebody or something else, without even necessarily intending to. And that’s the premise behind Post It and 3M’s new program — wherein you purchase a recycled product from them, and in return, they plant a tree for the environment. Not a bad deal.

It’s pretty simple — buy a select recycled product made by 3M Company, including a recycled version of the Post It notes we have all come to love at work and in the home office, and then go to the website to register your recycled Post It notes product. After a tiny registration procedure, you’re done. Tree gets planted, and you even get the chance to dedicate it.

Now, when you think about it, any company that sells paper products, especially when it’s their main product offering, should be required to plant trees in order to commit to sustainable forestry. It should be mandatory if we can’t figure out how to live without the benefit of paper products. That being said, why not make it part of your marketing campaign if you are? Post It says they’re “committed to sustainability” in that their paper is produced as a offshoot of well-managed forests where they replant trees consistently.

At this point in their twenty year history, Post-it brand notes says their recycled product line now contains “100-percent recycled paper with a minimum of 30 percent post-consumer material.” Sounds like the least any of us working in the office can do. So maybe they won’t be fluorescent pink — who cares. It’s worth the sacrifice.

So get the new 3M recycled products, register online, and they’ll plant a new tree.
